Summary

Spirit Rock’s Retreat Center Cook works with a team of cooks to prepare meals for residential retreats and special events, trains and supervises retreatants performing work meditations in the kitchen, and models behavior that supports mindfulness practice in the retreat environment. 

Responsibilities

Food Preparation

  • Prepare and serve tasty and nutritious lacto-ovo vegetarian meals on time.
  • Maintain an orderly and efficient kitchen work space.
  • Guide Cook Assistants in successful completion of prep list tasks.
  • Ensure work environment meets or surpasses hygiene and safety standards set by regulations.
  • Train and support retreatants in kitchen tasks.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and problem solving support to retreatants, Cook Assistants and Extra Hires as needed.
  • Assist with special events as needed.

 Other

  • Keep up to date with kitchen-related emails, schedules and kitchen updates.
  • Help put away food deliveries, keep kitchen clean and stocked, and assist with retreatant work meditations.
  • Other duties as necessary and/or assigned by the Kitchen Manager and/or the Assistant Kitchen Manager.

Qualifications

  • One to three years of professional cooking experience featuring organic whole food ingredients, in a high-volume kitchen, preferably in a contemplative work setting.
  • Flexibility in schedule on a daily and weekly basis, and ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to remain calm under kitchen pressure, and ability to work compassionately with retreatants.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; ability to take direction; ability to function as both team leader and team player.
  • Strong personal and ethical commitment to bringing mindfulness to all activities of daily life; background or interest in Vipassana meditation or other compatible spiritual tradition.
  • Ability to work around retreatants in an appropriate manner to protect “retreatant space” through mindfulness, slowed speed and mindful speech when retreatants are present.
  • Strong time management skills; ability to coordinate, follow through, and manage a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to access and read emails, including schedules and kitchen updates from home.
  • Must have reliable transportation and the ability to get to the Spirit Rock kitchen; this is a non-residential position.
  • Physical: Required to lift, carry, push or pull objects up to 50 pounds. Frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks such as lifting large pots of food in and out of the oven, carrying heavy boxes of produce, performing repetitive motions of cutting, stirring and whisking; Ability to work in a standing position for up to 8 hours in the kitchen.
  • Frequently required to use kitchen equipment such as blenders, mixers and food processors.
  • Ability to concentrate in a busy, sometimes hectic environment and adapt to the changing needs of the kitchen on a day to day basis.
  • Good typing and computer skills required for checking emails and typing kitchen meeting minutes.
  • Current food safety certification (California Food Handlers Card).
