In partnership with Spirit Rock senior leadership, the Human Resource Manager establishes human resources objectives in line with organizational goals and values. Fosters employee commitment and satisfaction through planning/managing human resources programs. The Human Resource Manager also ensures that the human resource management practices (actions and communications) reflect the values of the organization. 


  • In collaboration with the Director of People and Culture, implements human resources objectives by establishing department accountabilities, including employee acquisition, appropriate staffing levels, employment processing, compensation, health and welfare benefits, training and development, records management, safety and health, succession planning, employee relations and retention.
  • Develops HR programs and identifies key HR metrics to analyze and solve problems that impact organizational effectiveness. Ensure overall HR programs are updated annually as needed and aligned with Spirit Rock guidelines.
  • Develops policies on issues such as communication, compensation, performance management.
  • Holds responsibility for the Staff Dharma Program and works closely with the Staff Dharma Teacher.
  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensures policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in conferences and educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.


  • Provides leadership, expertise, guidance, and direction to Spirit Rock Directors and Managers in recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and performance related issues.
  • Provides management training in all aspects of human resources including promotions, conflict resolution terminations, and sexual harassment.
  • Provides staff-wide training, expertise, guidance, and direction on HR related topics such as compensation, benefits, retirement planning, and job development.
  • Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines; communicating and ensuring organization values.
  • Leads Management in appropriate resolution of employee relations issues including grievances and implementing disciplinary procedures.
  • Serves as HR consultant for Senior Leaders (Directors/Co-Guiding Teachers/ BOD and other Committee Chairs) on Human Resource related issues.


  • In partnership with managers, recruits staff, including developing job descriptions and position qualifications, posting, checking application forms, shortlisting, interviewing and selecting candidates.
  • Plans and conducts new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward company goals.
  • Administers performance review program to ensure effectiveness, compliance, and equity within organization.
  •  In collaboration with the Director of People and Culture, develops and maintains appropriate Spirit Rock compensation and benefit plans through analysis of wage/salary and benefit reports and data. Ensures internal compensation equity.
  • Oversees benefit programs including health/dental insurance, 403b plan, vacation, sick leave, retreat time and leave of absence.
  • Keeps records of benefits plans participation such as insurance and 403b plan, personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations.
  • Prepares employee separation notices and related documentation, and conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Manager level experience in human resources, which includes the areas of recruitment, salary administration, benefits administration, training, employment law, employee relations, organizational development, budgeting, planning, and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written, verbal and presentation.

  • Solid interpersonal skills with an ability to manage difficult situations and resolve conflicts with impartiality, clarity, and openness.
  • Ability to seek-out and consider new ideas and creative ways to resolve problems or enhance existing programs and systems.
  • Experience using HRIS software.
  • Understanding and integration of the Dharma into day-to-day work life, communications, and behavior.
  • Non-profit experience helpful.
