Summary
Spirit Rock is seeking a Part-Time Bookstore Manager for approximately 12-15 hours per week which may expand to Full-Time in the future based on Spirit Rock’s post-COVID program needs. The Bookstore Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the operation of the bookstore which sells books, gifts and tools used for meditation practice.
Primary Responsibilities
The Bookstore Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and managing bookstore activities which include:
Ordering books, gift items, supplies and maintenance of stock and inventory
Implementing and maintaining a digital ordering, inventory and POS system
Developing and implementing operating procedures as well as recommending appropriate related policies
Training and supervising bookstore volunteers and extra-hires for ongoing bookstore hours of operation which include residential retreat opening and closing days as well as special events
Responsible for preparing and managing yearly bookstore budget
Interfacing with Accounting to maintain accounting records
Oversees charging of payments and transfer of cash receipts to accounting
Contacting retreat teachers in a timely way to request which books they’d like sold at the end of retreats and managing the on-site logistics for sale.
Resolving customer issues associated with merchandise and purchases
In addition to working on a day-to-day basis with the staff in Retreat Operations, this person will work in collaboration with our Communications and Programs teams to consider and suggest special event ideas as well as book needs for current programs.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
Knowledge of bookstore retail operating principles, cashiering, budgeting, management principles, digital inventory, POS systems and accounting
Knowledge and interest in Buddhism and Spirit Rock Teachers with specific interest in teachings in the Theravada tradition desirable
Knowledge and interest in understanding new publications and gift ideas; a creative ability to keep the inventory fresh and move old inventory out
Knowledge and interest in Diversity Equity and Inclusion issues especially how they relate to Dharma books and programs
Strong communication and follow-up skills in working with teachers and staff in planning book needs
Experience in managing other part-time staff and/or volunteers
Well-organized, friendly and approachable
Ability to work with a diverse group of people
Strong skills in writing reports and correspondence
Ability to perform consistently, even under pressure
Working Conditions
12-15 hours per week to start which may increase as Spirit Rock re-evaluates our programs post-COVID; evening and weekend hours will be necessary
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
